The Raptors were originally set up in 2003 to record the locally themed music of the Bideford area written by Charles M Moore, Charlie had been writing songs to for some time and was requested to compose some material to help promote a local attraction namely the three masted ship, The Kathleen and May,Having written a few songs to cover the above subject Charlie asked Don Lewis and his son Paul to help record the music in their Studio called Froghollow at the Palladium club in Bideford, Soon Charlie was writing more material and the group decided it best to form a band, and Charlie duly came up with the name The Raptors after his love of birds of prey, and his great affection of the American group The Eagles,The band released through their own lable Raptormusic their first album (Down by the old river)in 2004,and to their surprise it was received very well and was played on local radio,it was evident though that they should try to put forward a more mainstream !-- but with hints of the previous album and in 2005 they produced and released their second album (Cast) this also received great favour, to the extent that it was difficult to keep up with production for the first few weeks,At the tail end of 2005 the band released a Christmas single called It"s Christmas unfortunatly however it was a little late in being released and sales were lower than expected, However the band will be re-releasing it again at the end of this year to a wider audience,At the moment Charlie is producing a lot of poetry for the Poemhunter site and you can read most of his material there including some of his song lyrics, Or you can log on to The Raptors music at Raptormusic.co.uk and listen to some of their songs and buy the albums,However if you wait you will be able to download some of our great songs here in the not to distant future, Thank you for reading, Take care and write on. Story behind the song
There are a lot of great country and western songs out there and the idea was to try and put across a song that would add to that great history.
Lyrics
(Verse 1) I guess when I"m gone and I can"t carry on people will do what they do they"ll tell you stories about things I"ve done most of which will be true then they"ll change their faces and say I"ve been places I"ve never seen or knew but I"m just an old rambling gambling man doing what I got to do. (Verse 2) I"ll drive fast cars and go drinking in bars and I"ll give some women the eye I must be quite handsome they often fall for me well I"m just that kind of a guy some fellas get jealous and I get in fights but it"s only to find out who"s wrong and who"s right I"m just an old rambling gambling man struggling through life the best that I can. (Chorus.) I"m just an old rambling gambling man take it from me that it"s true I"ll give you odds that are second to none then I"ll go off somwhere new I"ll take my chances and put down my slice on horses or poker blackjack and dice fix the odds in my favour wherever I can cause I"m just an old rambling gambling man. (Verse 3) I"ll dress quite smart it"s a kind of an art it makes people see what I mean it opens doors and it gives you a start when you know that you haven"t a bean they"ll soon get talking and part with their cash well if your going to do it, do it with class life"s just a game of roulette that"s been canned and I"m just an old rambling gambling man. Chorus. Bridge. (Verse 4) We all end up square at the end of the day just as we started the same whether your"e King or a Queen or a Jack well Joker it"s part of the game don"t get upset when you look at your hand it can change in an instant it"s never been planned remember who told you when I"m dead and damned it was that old rambling gambling man. Chorus, (repeat last two lines.)
