Story behind the song
One of the most common clichés about scouts is that they must make a promise to "do a good deed every day". Actually, they are not supposed to promise doing ONE good thing every day (and being done with it for the rest of their time). But they do give a promise to make the world a little better, its contents differing according to age and group, and (or at least I hope) they give their best to keep it. In my group, such a promise usually is a solemn celebration - it may be held in a warm summer's night under the stars, or at the banks of a moonlit river, in the ruins of a huge and strong castle or in a cave lit by torches and candles, at the warm campfire with singing and dancing... - or in the crisp cold of a winter's night with half a meter of snow. But it's always worth being remembered and sung about. (By the way, talking about scouts and their promise: In 2007 the World Scout Movement will celebrate its 100th birthday, and on August 1st, 100 years after the very first scout group started its very first camp, all scouts all around the world will renew their given promise greeting the rising sun - "one world, one promise".)
