Story behind the song
The Butterfly & Fermoy Lasses: The Butterfly is credited to the late fiddler Tommy Potts, who knew the first two parts of the tune from his father, Sean, an Uilleann piper. The Fermoy Lasses is a well-known reel, highly popular among Clare players. Its popularity in Clare may be at least partly due to its having been played by travelling pipers Johnny and Felix Doran who started coming to Clare by the end of the 1930s.
