Story behind the song
Inspiration for songs is a funny thing. I got the line ""Jessie was the daughter of the richest man in town" while just doodling on my guitar. For some reason, it made me think of my niece, Maggie Jean. I don't know why as it really doesn't reflect her life, but that's where it came from. For that reason, I've dedicated it to her. A good friend of mine and great guitarist helped add some of the electric guitar parts on this. My thanks to John Anderson for his guitar prowess.
Lyrics
"LONESOME WIND" Jessie was the daughter Of the richest man in town Looked just like her mama did Before they laid her in the ground Her daddy raised her all alone Tried hard to do his part But Jessie had a wild streak A quiet hunger and an aching heart Now Billy was a young man Just passing thru the town A blanket roll and his strong back Were all he brought around All he'd ever wanted Was a chance to settle down Never had much of anything Emptiness was all he'd found Blow on you lonesome wind Echo softly thru the night The dreams you carry drift anew The hope for one true love Beats softly in each heart Today tomorrow calls to you Blow on you lonesome wind Stay true Jessie carried flowers For the local country store Walking down the steps She fell stumbled to the floor She hit her head and lost her sense A small crowd gathered round Billy stepped out placed a cool cloth on her face As she came around Their eyes met and they both knew Things were changed for ever more In each others eyes they saw The love they'd waited for They talked for hours and shared their dreams All the pentup hope they'd stored Hand in hand they walked along Till they came to Jessie's door Jessies daddy met them A fire in his eyes Get in here and close the door Don't you believe that boys lies That boys just a drifter He'll never be any more As she came inside Jessie cried As her daddy stepped out the door He looked hard at Billy And said this can't go on Now go on get moving Get back where you belong Billy turned without a word A sadness to his step Then he stopped and turned around This is what he said Blow on you lonesome wind Echo softly thru the night The dreams you carry drift anew The hope for one true love Beats softly in each heart Today tomorrow calls to you Blow on you lonesome wind Stay true Late that evening as her daddy slept Jessie stole out the back door Billie waited in the dark Had two horses he'd swapped for They slipped away so quietly While their love burned oh so bright A gentle wind sang promises As they rode into the night Now Jessies dad is on his knees As he prays at his wifes grave He cries please help me Lord I can't bear another day Just then a gentle wind Blew softly thru his mind He saddled up his horse and set off His family he had to find Now several years have come and gone Since that fateful day Jessies Sara will be three years old Come the first of May She sits upon grand daddies knees The sparkle in his eyes Billy tends the stock and farms the land Dad helped them buy Blow on you lonesome wind Echo softly thru the night The dreams you carry drift anew The hope for one true love Beats softly in each heart Today tomorrow calls to you Blow on you lonesome wind Stay true
