Story behind the song
NOTE FROM THE OFFICE OF HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA: "Dear Demian Elainé Yumei, His Holiness the Dalai Lama directs me to thank you...He very much appreciates that you and your song writing partner, Stacey Young, has written the Song called Free Tibet. Your concern for and solidarity with the Tibetan people and their struggle for freedom are much appreciated. His Holiness sends you His prayers and good wishes. Best wishes, Tenzin Geyche Tethong Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama" ******What a thrill and an honor to receive this email! And we were so fortunate to have the wonderful talent of Dolma Tempa on this song. It was she, who brought this song to the attention of His Holiness. She had fled Tibet in 1959 with the Dalai Lama, and worked in the exiled Tibetan government. I met Dolma through my involvement with the Chinese detainess from the Golden Venture in York. She graciously agreed to chant on the end of "Free Tibet". We let Dolma choose what she felt would be the best prayer to use, and she chose one she said His Holiness wrote specifically as a gift to his people. What a blessing this was for us, especially as it gave us the opportunity to get to know a little of the remarkable person Dolma is. It was important to me when we wrote this song, to make it as inclusive as possible. The last verse really says it all to me...each of us responsible, each of us connected in ways we can't even begin to imagine. Free Tibet. Free us all.
Lyrics
Deep in the Himalayas Up on the Roof of the World There is a Shangri-La Beauty on the high plateau Deep in the human heart On a plain of truth and love Flowing with the seasons Morning with the sun With the earth, with the sky We are one Free Tibet, Free Tibet Free Tibet, Free Tibet Forced to wander the earth A voice reaches out to every heart A song of the Soul They long to return home We are the invaders We are the refugees Truth, a gentle mystery When China lets them be She will find with the dawn She, herself, is free Free Tibet, Free Tibet Free Tibet, Free Tibet Prayer Free Tibet, Free Tibet Free Tibet, Free Tibet Prayer and refrain repeated to end
