the fallen leaves are rosie hillman (voice, guitar, percussion, cooking, badges) and matt kassell (bass, piano, nylon string guitar, voice, drums, spelling). we
the fallen leaves are rosie hillman and matt kassell. we write, play and record everything ourselves. rosie plays guitar, writes songs, sings her heart out and sometimes plays a slightly out of time shaker! she also does the cooking, makes badges, gets angry at computers and takes photographs. matt plays bass, guitar, piano, drums, writes songs and sings. he also does the spelling, reads the papers, calms rose down when she gets cross at computers and poses for photographs. we make good, hearty, wholesome, honest, heartfelt, melodic, gentle music.

Story behind the song
down to earth started out as a lovely bass and guitar thing we tried - then rose added some lyrics about simple childhood pleasures, heart-weary searching for love, and finally sinking into perfect warm comforting arms after a few false starts and tumbles out of trees. the magic backwards vocals were a pure accident but they fit very well. rose wishes matt would release a solo album of his bass lines - this one is lovely!
Lyrics
when you were growing you used to take time you'd look for the patterns in the leaves you'd cartwheel on summer lawns till the stars were in your eyes then you'd fall on your back and sigh when you were younger you would kick off your shoes and wiggle your toes in the sun feel red hot sand underfoot and you'd run for miles and miles till the waves chased you back up the beach now you climb up the big tree you think that you're safe above ground but you tumble like falling snow out of his arms without a sound and back down to earth again now that you're older you've got scratches on your knees but someone to keep your heart safe you twirl under moon and stars and you dance home through the dawn then you fall back to arms that keep you warm
