Story behind the song
There are very few tributes to Johnny Cash since his death, so I felt it appropriate to write and sing my appreciation of one of the world's greatest country legends.
Lyrics
AS I LOOK OUT ON THE PRAIRIE SO VAST AND SO GRAND I WONDER WHERE THE COWBOYS HAVE ALL GONE WHEN THE SOUND OF HOOFBEATS WAS HEARD THROUGHOUT THIS LAND WAY OUT WHERE THE WEST WAS WON. CHORUS: EMPTY SADDLES AND OLD CORRALS EVERYWHERE I GO THAT’S ALL I SEE OH, HOW I WISH I COULD GO BACK ONCE AGAIN AND RE-LIVE THOSE DAYS THAT USED TO BE THERE’S AN OLD BELT BUCKLE THAT WAS GIVEN ME BY A FRIEND OF MINE BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY HE SAID KEEP THIS AND REMEMBER AN OLD BRONC RIDER FRIEND IT’S A TREASURE THAT I CHERISH TO THIS DAY. CATTLE DRIVES ,TRAIL RIDES AND BUSTIN BRONCS MADE UP HIS DAY LONG HOURS OF ROPIN’ AND BRANDIN CALVES WAS THIS COWBOY’S WAY WAS IT WORTH ALL THAT DIRT HE ATE? HE NEVER ONCE COMPLAINED AND AT THE END OF THE DAY JUST A POUCH OF TOBACCO AND BEANS ON HIS PLATE. THE FREEDOM, THE GREAT OUTDOORS AND THE GOOD TIMES AROUND THE CAMPFIRE FOR THIS OLD COWPOKE HAVE GONE IT’S WAY AND OF HIS WORLDLY POSSESIONS ALL THAT REMAINS IS A BRONC BUSTIN’ BUCKLE FROM THE GOOD OLD RODEO DAYS. NOW MY FRIEND HAS GONE, HIS WAY OF LIFE A MERE MEMORY OF WHAT USED TO BE HE SAID “KEEP MY ONLY POSSESION IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME” THIS TREASURE I WILL CHERISH FOR THE REST OF MY DAYS AND REMEMBER MY GOOD OLD FRIEND AND HIS COWBOY WAYS. I CAN ALMOST SEE THEM AS THEY WERE BACK THEN BRANDIN’ CALVES AND BRINGIN’ IN THE STRAYS BUT THE LIFESTYLE THEY LIVED WE’LL NEVER SEE AGAIN WHERE COYOTES HOWLED AND CATTLE USED TO GRAZE.
