Story behind the song
Thought came to mind about how being born on a train might affect one's life. The verse about laying down between the tracks is a true story about a dare we made to each other as kids.
Lyrics
That Train Song (3:30 minutes) Gave all he had to my mama and me, Just an unborn son he would never see The night my ma and pa went there separate ways I was born, on a midnight train Well I was raised in a rail side shack And I’d fall asleep to that clickety clack All day long I’d run along side And learned real young how to hop a ride (Chorus) Well I got a soul like a runaway train, I got a heart that feels no pain When your born with tracks, ‘neath your bed You sleep with eyes wide open, rolling straight ahead I could always tell when the next one came I could hear the rattling of my window pane The ground would swell and the dogs would howl Engine roared, I grew to love that sound As a boy I’d lay between the tracks Let the train roll over as I lay on my back Let that engine brush past my face And thank God for his saving grace Chorus Now every time I hear that whistle blow My heart starts to pump and I got to go Get this feeling got to ride the rails Hurry on up now, feets don’t fail I’m standing on top of my own boxcar And I’m heading west, riding CNR Going clear across the land Enging master, pick up now, fast as you can. (Chorus picks up, played twice, slows and trails off) Written by: Jacques Goudreault SOCAN (C)
