We Shadow Ourselves
Comment Share
Energetic, nervy rock.
electronica progressive rock eclectic quartet strang anthemic
Artist picture
Eclectic, intelligent rock-driven tunes with big guitars and more than a hint of electronica give us a sound unlike any other band.
The Strang Quartet formed (officially) in Cambridge UK in 2003, consisting of long-time friends Martin (guitars and vocals) and Julian (drums, keyboards, guitars and production). Our mission statement: to make deep, meaningful, noisy sounds for the delectation of ourselves and others.

Story behind the song
Motivated by our paranoid middle-class tabloid media who try to have us seeing child abusers and terrorists everywhere simply because it makes money for them.
Lyrics
Down every leafy lane, on every corner A beast is lurking Following us home on Friday night Malevolence is working Can't sleep too well at night Count seconds till the morning Don't feel so good today Don't want to leave without some warning Footsteps fall behind me Is there poison in the subway? Please do not remind me Can't trust anyone today Blame the government Blame the sixties Blame the immigrants Blame the hippies Darkness moves across the land The sun eclipsed by a stretched-out hand In the places where the good light falls But doesn't quite reach the ground We shadow ourselves We shadow ourselves Our children are not safe So lock them in a schoolday convoy Choking the future from under their feet The real enemy free to destroy Blame the leaves Blame the leavers Blame the parents Blame non-acheivers Darkness moves across the land The sun eclipsed by a stretched-out hand In the places where the good light falls But doesn't quite reach the ground We shadow ourselves We shadow ourselves Seeing the world as others think we should A suspicious ambience in innocent places Darkening skies and nervous eyes Mistrusting glances on acquaintance's faces Live cosy lives on the road to the cemetery Slightly worried that we have no real trouble Vent some frustration at the seige of the nation Mentally digging our families from the rubble Our possessions are not safe So it's 3am, shotgun clutched tight Chewing Arabica to kickstart the senses Floorboards sigh in the cold of the night Blame the devil Blame the Jews Blame God's inaction Blame the Six O'Clock News Blame the old folk Blame the youth of today Blame the godless Blame everybody Darkness moves across the land The sun eclipsed by a stretched-out hand In the places where the good light falls But doesn't quite reach the ground We shadow ourselves We shadow ourselves The runaway train came down the track, Her whistle wide and her throttle back Brakes screaming and sparking, still gaining velocity Much begging of questions with quiet ferocity How do we stop this, why are we here HOW DO WE STOP THIS, WHY ARE WE HERE? Somebody's nightmare, somebody's cancer Choking on silence, awaiting an answer How do we stop this, why are we here HOW DO WE STOP THIS, WHY ARE WE HERE?
