Story behind the song
It was way past closing time, and the bartender was having trouble clearing us out. We had gotten to the Jack Daniels weepy stage. He had earlier overheard us talking about being musicians, so to get us to leave, he challenged us to “go home and write me the saddest GD song ever”. We did, with the first wifes contributing most of the lyric, and our rhythm player (now sadly deceased) supplying most of the tune. We wroe it kind of tongue in cheek, kinda like that ‘You don’t have to call me darlin’ record. When we played him this demo the next week, he cries. He had it pressed onto a 45, and is still played a lot on his juke box, especially near closing time. I think that’s the only copy. Except, of course, this one. So if you’re ever at the Dew Drop Inn in Fox River Farms, Il…..
Lyrics
I can tell by the way you love me you don’t love me anymore I can tell by the way you look at me you don’t see me like before And when you hold me close, that’s when you seem so far away And them tender words I used to hear are the words you never say Chorus: Will you love me like you love me now tomorrow? Will you love me today like you did last year? Was the love you gave just some thing you borrowed To be bought and paid for later with my tears? We’re just goin’ through the motions of a matrimony mime It seems our tender grapes of love have withered on the vine You can’t fill the need within me, you don’t hear me when I speak ‘Cause the cup that once ran over now just dribbles, drips and leaks Chorus Spoken: Oh, darlin’, if I could turn back the clock and make all our yesterdays tomorrow, or if I could make today the way it was, if I could look forward to the way it used to be, then I’d set the hands of time on the hour we first met, and live each hour like a precious second, and make the future we had happen immediately, because now is the only thing we’re gonna have left when we finish the things we’ve never done. The honey bees have left the hive, the hornet’s movin’ in So let’s finish startin’ over at the end where we’ll begin Was our passion only passin’ through on the way to misery? Will our love become the way it was, or the way it’s going to be? Chorus You say you got to find yourself, you need to be alone And you never seem to be more lost than when you’re here at home You’re a stranger in the body of the one you used to be It seems you found you someplace else, and now your losin’ me Chorus
