Story behind the song
This song was written during the summer of 2004 in honor of the upcoming 400th Anniversary Celebration of Jamestown, Virginia. It is a song I wrote as I was considering how I, as a citizen of the Historic Triangle, could contribute to the event. In 2007 Jamestown will be celebrating the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in the United States. It will be a huge, historic event and I am offering my song as one of the theme songs for the celebration and dedicating it to all the citizens of The Historic Triangle.
Lyrics
Jamestown 400th Anniversary Song Written by Thomas Eck Verse 1: They loaded the ships and they named them all three; The Godspeed, Susan Constant, the Discovery. They set sail on the sea, for four months and more; And in May they landed ashore. Verse 2: On the banks of the James a small settlement grew; John Smith was one leader who guided them through. But the Starving Time came, they fought to survive; many died without their dreams realized. Chorus: But here we are, 400 years from then; 1607 ‘till now, celebrate one and all! Here we are, America standing strong; People now gather ‘round and celebrate. Verse 3: The ones who endured helped to build our free land; Where our voices are heard, and democracy stands. And to those who came first, we owe much to them; Their vision lives again and again. Chorus: And here we are, 400 years from then; 1607 ‘till now, celebrate one and all! Here we are, America standing strong; People now gather ‘round and celebrate. [Repeat chorus with many voices joining in.]
