Story behind the song
Burma Shave Growing up in the 50's & 60's the Burma Shave sign was part of the landscape. AS kids we would wait with anticipation for the next set of 5 signs with their clever little rhymes. This song relays the nostalgia of reading those signs. All references to signs in the choruses are from actual signs. This was another of those songs that came in a flash.
Lyrics
Burma Shave C 2004 by D. Hansen & M. Hickman B.M.I. Load up the Buick we’re on the road 71 out of El Campo On a Sunday drive Spring is here it’s Bluebonnet time A Coke and peanuts for just a dime I can smell that air Little League tryouts are almost here Countin’ the days cause summer’s near Lookin’ for signs along the highway Playin’ the Burma Shave game Henry the 8th Prince of Friskers Lost 6 wives But kept his whiskers He lit a match To check gas tank That’s why they call him Skinless Frank Don’t Try passing on a slope Unless you have a periscope Many a forest used to stand Where a lighted match got out of hand He had the ring He had the flat She felt his chin and that was that Burma Shave Memorial day means that school is out The Bringalls are playin’ Twist & Shout At the Twilight Roller Rink The Legion pool is our hideaway Splash Day is commin’ up Saturday It’s watermelon time Doin’ the Hand Jive and doin’ the Jerk Beatle boots and corduroy's and collarless shirts Garner State Park in our rearview mirror Countin those Burma Shave signs She put a bullet through his hat But he’s had closer shaves than that If Crusoe had kept his chin more tidy He might have found a Lady Friday The salesman taught the farmers daughter To plant her tu-lips where she otter A Man a Miss A car a curve He kissed the Miss and missed the curve The big blue tube’s just like Louise You get a thrill from every squeeze Burma Shave...Burma Shave
