Story behind the song
I heard a very similar story one day and decided it should be made into a song.
Lyrics
Beulah And Harley Copyright Sonny B. Bell (ASCAP) Beulah led the gossip at the first self-righteous church She had her nose in everyone’s business but hers Nobody really liked her but they never called her bluff That is until she finally made ol’ Harley mad enough When Harley Jones was new in town he drove a beat up car And Beulah saw it in a parking spot right down by the bar Well, she proceeded to tell everybody of the sordid life he led Never mind the fact they’d never even met Then one day there at the church before the Lord and all Beulah asked ol’ Harley about his taste for alcohol She said “I've seen your car down by the bar, so I naturally assumed You must be an alcoholic, Now isn’t that the truth?” Well, Harley never said a word, he just turned and walked away But he had the whole town talkin’ about what he didn’t say ‘Cause the very next morning Beulah got her own surprise Harley parked in Beulah’s yard and left it there all night (instrumental break) Yeah, the Bible warns of drinkin’ and the damage it can do But sin is sin no matter when, or how you break the rules So think before you gossip, or tell a harmless, lie ‘Cause you never know where Harley’s car… might end up tonight
