Story behind the song
Morrigan was the goddess of war of the Tuatha De Danann, the people of ancient Ireland. I first saw a poster of Morrigan in O'Reilley's Irish Pub in Washington, DC.. She was pictured as a beautiful young lady with long flowing hair and wielding a large sword... I read several accounts of Morrigan in the library and my song is sort of a combination of all with a little personal embellishment. Our friend David Corcoran especially liked this song (David used to play with Roy Buchanan in a band- when Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones died Roy was the first person the surviving Stones asked to join the band but Roy refused- but that's another story..David called himself "Morrigan's son" for a while). Dedicated to Annie McLoone (who I used as a model for my drawing of Morrigan and singer for the bands Sageworth and Walter Egan, who recorded the hit "Magnet and Steel" with Stevie Nicks)... Bernadette Weeks, fan of the Irish folk group I play with and the only Jew I've ever met from Dublin.... my Irish ancestors and, of course, to Morrigan. (Picture of Morrigan by Danielle Ni Dhighe)
Lyrics
MORRIGAN Danann came to Erin's shore Tribe of Dan in days of yore Led by warrior-goddess so brave Defeating foes and battles save Morrigan - goddess of war Yet so lovely to be adored Fierce beauty of ages past Morrigan and ancient cast In Time of Legends Morrigan had flowing hair Sword raised up in Celtic air On mystic steed she rode on high Can you see her in the sky? Long before the Vikings came Gaelic children knew her name Defending those in need Seanachie praise her deeds Tuatha de Danann Firbolgs, DeDanann, Milesians Ancestors of Irish islands Spirits live on the tales do say Heroes for the latter days And Morrigan does she yet defend Help thru nights Irish children Perhaps her battles may be done When Erin agin is one When Ireland can be one Copyright © 2000 Davy Shannon. And I forgot to tell you, that while his heart was in Ireland, he was born and lived all his life in the U.S. We were able to get to Ireland for the first time, not long before he died. Thanks to the kindness of the gent running the open mic at Dublin's International Bar, he realized his dream of playing music there. We performed his "To Ireland Someday to Go," and covered "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Dorothy.

This song was written, recorded and sung my late friend, one-time significant other, music partner and band founder Davy Shannon. Davy struggled through life with numerous painful and debilitating ailments, always soothing himself with his guitar. This is one of the few times he ever sang and I think this is his best vocal work. Dorothy H. Sherman, former lead singer and flute player, 4 Ever Erin.
