Story behind the song
In the Fall of 2002, I was asked to write a song for a young girl about to reach her first stages of womanhood. How could I say no? She was soon to become a maiden. What message do I want to give her at this special time? Do I tell her about the changes in her body and in the way she thinks? Do I tell her about what it is like to be a woman? Do I tell her about the dance of Maidenhood and it leading to the possibility of Motherhood, ahh, the joy and agony of it all? Do I give her bits of information about being a woman? No.. she’d be getting lots of that from her Mother’s Circle of Friends. What could I tell her? In the winter, I sat with my guitar in my darkened living room. As I pondered my joy and hope for her life, I saw her mother, and her Mothers’ Mother, and her Mother’s Mother… and the song manifested before I knew what was happening. This is another one of my songs that I really feel is a gift of the Goddess.. a channeling of the Goddess, so to speak. The lyrics invoke the Triple nature of Feminine Deity, our female ancestors and the listener, to rejoice in the celebration of Womanhood. When I've performed it live, and since the Cd's release, I've had many women tell me that The Maiden Song brings warmth to their hearts and tears to their eyes. And like The Welcoming, the Blessing song for a new child, The Maiden Song is being used in The Rites of Passage for Maidens, and for the Celebration of WOMAN!
Lyrics
The Maiden Song (words & music by Michelle Mays) Chorus Aphrodite, Iris, Artemis, Persephone Danu, Demeter, Hera, Isis, Selu Morrigan, Hecate, Cerridwen, Kali-ma Like your Mother before you And her Mother before her, On and on since the dawn of time. The wheel turns, The Spiral yearns, The rites of Passage are upon you. We call you now to Sacred Circle Where we dance with Natures plan Ah, come dance with the Mother Ah, come dance Sweet Maiden Ah, come dance with the Crone, all things shall be known. We are the daughters of investigation We are the Mother of Creation We are the Crones of Realization The Action, the Knower and the Known. You’re Leaving Childhood behind Embracing womanhood with your maiden’s blood! Chorus The Spiral Spins and Turns Fulfillment is where it yearns It’s the Driving force of Evolution It always leads ………to resolution. For every action has reaction. We call to you, from this ancient circle Where we dance with Nature’s Plan Ah, come dance with the Mother Ah, come dance Sweet Maiden Ah, come dance with the Crone, all things shall be known.
