Story behind the song
Each year, on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, about 2,000 people fill Salt Lake's Abravanel Hall to participate in a special "sing-in" performance of Handel's Messiah. Each time the chorus sings, members of the audience stand, open their personal score, and join in. Participation in this annual event has become a special Christmas tradition for my wife, Michelle, and me, and this piece provides one of the most poignant moments in the event. "Behold and see if there be any sorrow."
