Story behind the song
The original song was written in the Studio at Ben's house in Plymouth. Ben had been in a nationally touring punk band (Ace Troubleshooter), but was looking at a future in recording. We only recorded this one song with him as a single for No Small Wonder (Then including Eric Stuberg). The song was developed by David and Ned (Drummer) in about 10 minutes of genius. It had an obvious Blink 182 Ballad Style, but thundered into distortion on the second verse. The theme of the song is the almost insurmountable distance between ourselves and our future love. The author has a sense of connection with that person, even with the monstrous difference between them. Ned thought the song may have been about David's long distance relationship with Carrie from Alabama (Fall 2001-Spring 2003), but the song was a bit more forward looking. The second verse also claimed that this person didn't know David yet. The early recording of the song was thin, and Ben added a baseline. An electric guitar solo was also added to fill an instrumental gap of about 30 seconds. You can hear the origial recording on Garageband.com. The song was adapted by nosmallwonder in an acoustic ballad style in time for the Club 3 Degrees Show on June 25th, 2004. The song has had an incredible response online! We have received letters and notes from individuals all over the world that have been touched by this song. The most emphatic response was from Catherine Brennan from England! This is what she said: "I have only recently discovered SoundClick and spent most of my working day playing your gorgeous song Approaching The Distance. Thankyou so much for bringing this song into my life. I couldn't believe my luck to stumble across such an absoulutely beautiful gem." Future plans for the song are unclear but it will be re-recorded and placed on nosmallwonder's album brokennearsperfection in December of 2004. It might be the single for the album depending upon the outcome of the final recordings of all 14 songs.
