Story behind the song
I am taking the single-note theme of Johan Sebastian Bach’s Joy of Man’s Desiring, a prime example of tonality in classical music. I will have the theme played through once without any alterations. This represents mankind’s perception of reality during the time of Newtonian physics, and the fact that everything seemed logical and rational. I will then place a 10% probability of the chance that any random note will contain a random pitch value for the second repetition. I calculate two values of randomness at this point, one value which deals with which notes will be random (10% of the notes), and another value which deals with which pitch the notes will be (on a scale from 1-88 due to the limitations of the piano). It is important to note, that the process used to achieve “randomness” is mathematical, and is thus limited and not purely random, rather it is a reasonable approximation for my project. I will increase the probabilities in increments of 10% for each repetition until I reach 100% probability that the notes will be random (This statement can be attacked due to the inherent paradox it contains, “absolute randomness”, but will suffice). This progression will represent mankind’s changing perception of reality, and how mathematics/science has loosened our grip of reality. By the end, the tonal qualities of the theme are totally gone, and instead, all that is left is an irrational mess- precisely what we have with quantum physics. (Song was for a college project...whether you think it is b.s. or not, it took me awhile to make this thing)
