Maybe there's a reason

A song that suddenly wanted to come out, while I was playing around with some bass lines. The tune and lyrics were made up on the spot and the song is pretty lo-fi and rough. But I like the mood. The words relate to some recent tragic events.

New band name for my one man band. The ancient form of my first name.
My name is Holger Luth. I was about 15 years old, when I got my first guitar. Actually it belonged to an older friend, but the never played it, so he let me borrow it. I had been taking piano lessons earlier, but I hated it. The most fun I had with the piano, was to create my own little tunes. i was no good at repetitive rehearsing. It has been the same with my guitar playing. Many of my guitar playing friends, spent hours rehearsing technical stuff. I never had the patience for that, I just did what I thought sounded right. My mind was more directed towards songwriting, than towards being the guitar hero, though I did like to play neverending live solos, long enough to make the bass player make puking sounds and the drummer start throwing sticks at me... I played in both small and larger bands with up to 8-9 people, with violins, flutes and lots of other instruments, but I think my best time in a band, was playing in a three piece. It was in the aftermath of Police, British New Wave, the Danish Punk scene, Danish songwriters like C.V. Jorgensen and many more. You had to invent a lot of new "big" chords, in order to create a bigger sound, being the only guitarist ( and lead singer). Later I started listening a lot to bands like U2, The Cure, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk and most of all Peter Gabriel. Peter is like my guiding star. I have had the luck of seeing him in concert a couple of times in the recent years and even if he has gained a few pounds and is called "Papa Bear" by his bass player, he can still sing better than anyone I know. His voice is directly wired to his heart, it's like every word has its' own set of wings and flies out of his mouth, carrying an important message. Wish I could get anywhere near that! My musical taste has developed over the years and I try out a lot of different genres, out of curiosity and because I get inspired by other musicians, here on SC and by other friends in music. I have 3 sons, that are all engaged in music somehow and they have also inspired me a lot. They have a totally different take on the term "Musician", than I have and I find it inspiring and I am amazed at the multifaceted way they can tackle the tasks of a songwriter, producer and musician. I must admit, that my music sounds a little old fashioned compared to music of today, but what the heck.. I am from 1957, I grew up with Beatles, Stones, Kinks, The Who, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Bob Dylan.. need I say more?

Story behind the song
I had been playing around with some flangered bass sound and suddenly there was a song on the way. I made up the tune and the lyrics line by line, thinking about what I had seen on the TV the last few days. It made me so sad...
Lyrics
Maybe there's a reason, but I don't know the reason for this. Ooh, ooh, please tell me what it is. How can someone justify, to let innocent people die, they run and try to hide. This time we should let them know, they should just give up and go back home. And live their lives. Maybe there's a reason, but why do innocent people have to die? I simply - don't understand why. Makes me cry. Maybe there's a reason, but there's a thousand things that you could do (better things) to get your message through. And I'm fed up with being nice, trying to understand your point of view. It's not coming through. There's no way you will persuade me, everything you do just makes me sad. Maybe there's a reason, but I don't see the reason any more. I've given up. It's just too late. Maybe there's a reason, But whatever twisted reason you may have. I just don't care. Maybe there was a reason. But I don't think you remember it any more. What you're fighting for.

Some images related with a state of serenity have flashed in my mind during listening to the composition. Very heartfelt, sincere music. Both vocal and acoustics sound so soothing and therefore so pleasant... PS: Oh, I have read the text after the listening - my English is far of perfect, - so I can see now the certain contrast between the content of the song and its peaceful tunes and chords... However I like either the theme or the lyrics, and I find their combination with music as quite organic.

This is a poignant song of frustration, concern and calm against all the odds. It says what so many of us feel in a beautiful way.

This song grabs your heartstrings and never lets go. It expresses the feelings and frustrations of so many of us, and does it with music and poetry and beauty, in the face of something that is the exact opposite. Unforgettable.

This is a beauty Holger!! Love the "environment" of this song, maybe rough ( as you told ) but so good and "elementary" straight on, I love such tunes!! The drums sound is perfect for this song, nice bass line, but more then this I liked your melody and vocals treat on this one...... probabily one of your best imho, but surely my preferred song among yours my friend!! Geat job Holger, as Mike Duran wrote: "Excellent inspiration put to music"!!! YES! :)
I like how that liquid bass sound works in this context - nice arrangement/production for a great song.

The song definitely has a mood that grabs the attention right away, the melody is very engaging too. Great lyrics and sentiments. I can hear your despair and sense of sadness and exasperation with the way things are in the world. First class writing, composition and performance.

I'm sure we'll try to find that reason until the day we ourselves die... Commanding acoustic performance Holger - excellent composition!
