Folk music for postmoderns
I am what you might call a musical generalist. I listen to pretty much everything and I compose in pretty much any style, though I concentrate mainly on folk, folk-rock, rock, synth-pop, alternative, comedy, musical theatre, jazz, new-age, film music, avant-garde, and the occasional lullaby (why sing your kid to sleep with "Rock-a-bye Baby" when you can can create something personalized?). I've done most of my professional (i.e. paid) work in the theatre, where I've been musical director for dozens of productions. I was also musical director of Mental Floss, the legendary Miami improv group, for over 500 performances; I recently did a stint with Laughing Gas, which rose from the ashes of Mental Floss 11 years ago to become the longest running improv group in South Florida. As a singer-songwriter, I've concentrated most of my energy on my signature style of synth-driven folk-rock (sort of Indigo Girls meets Vangelis). I'm also something of a minor celebrity in the world of Filk (folk music for science fiction fans), where I am proud to be the object of the worlds smallest international fan base.

Story behind the song
This was a song I put together as a sort of exercise. I wanted to see if I could write and record an Alan Parsons Project song along the lines of Eye in the Sky. It would have an instrumental intro, a pulsating bass and ethereal vocals reminiscent of Eric Woolfson or Chris Rainbow. I was having a bit of writer's block on the lyrics, so I posted a request on a Facebook Alan Parsons fan group looking for lyricists. I got a response from Ian Thomas -- a musician and illustrator and all-around multi-talented fellow in Melbourne. I sent him the instrumental track, and he added some terrific words and a lovely melody. I recorded the vocal tracks, throwing in some harmonies and overlapping vocal lines, and this recording is the result. It's still slightly a work in progress -- I need to redo the vocals at the pickup to each verse; I came in a split second late on all three. Otherwise, it's one of my better vocal tracks. It's actually part of a larger plan to create a work of musical "fan-fiction," an Alan Parsons Project album written, arranged and recorded by Alan Parsons fans. There are a lot of talented musicians in the Facebook group, and I think we can do it. It may take a while -- I haven't had much tie to work on it in the past 8 months or so, but I beleive it's possible.
Lyrics
Existing as Sound Lyrics by Ian C. Thomas I hear the crickets chirping I feel the breeze The night sky fills with echoes Floating back to me. And in an endless moment Rhapsodies Flowing like a heartbeat Flowing into me. Oo-ooh, existing as sou-ou-ound Oo-ooh, existing as sou-ou-ound I hear the words you’re speaking I hear the sea And all of this time that’s passing For you and me. You think we’re on a wavelength You don’t hear me. All of the time I’m listening We can’t a-gree-ee-ee.
