Story behind the song
Early century before last, America needed a national anthem or at least music to support FS Key's war poem about the flag surviving a night of battle ; and as far as the preamble goes, church needed something lubricous before passing the hat around ("from whom all blessings flow" was a cue to empty out the pockets) ... at least it was in my church.
