My favorite kinds of music is the kind that surprises you. While I enjoy conventional type songs (verse, chorus, verse chorus, bridge, chorus), I prefer songs that take you on an adventure. This includes jam songs (Grateful Dead), and songs with many detours and lots of dynamics (Rickie Lee Jones, Dave Matthews). Although most of my songs tend to fall into some kind of normal verse/chorus formula, I do tend to try and mix things up a bit. Which is why most of my songs last longer than 4 or 5 minutes.

Story behind the song
This was the first song I started writing after the passing of my wife Renee, thus the title "First Song After". But tragedy hit our family again just three months after she passed away and my daughter lost her husband and the father of her two children, the youngest one was just born three weeks before. As I was writing this song for my late wife, I added some lyrics and now the song is for both my wife and my son-in-law, Antonio. It's specifically about losing someone close to you and the regret of not saying all the things you wanted to tell them while they were alive.
