I was invited on an all expense paid trip to Memphis for Elvis Week 2012, and this song and video was used to promote the trip. Lots of fanatical devotion from his fans for the earliest rock n roll phenom and arguably the all-time best pop singer.
alternative pop rock jazz urban satire

Story behind the song
Although this song is largely a tongue-in-cheek deification, I have to admit that I was too young in the 50's to really appreciate Elvis' roots in black Beale St. blues and gospel, and the social implications involved. The Colonel tarnished a lot of people's perceptions of him with the shallow 60's movies he contracted him for. It's too bad Elvis didn't retire at his peak in the early 70's or better yet, die in a plane crash. Certainly, Colonel Tom Parker was not the best manager for Elvis, but also, few people realize that he was actually a Dutch national who entered the US illegally and changed his name, immediately after a female neighbour of his in Holland, was found murdered. Though the case was never solved, it does beg the question.
Lyrics
On a bus named Hound-dog we were on our way Off to Memphis where the king was to play Risen from the dead in digital sync Everyone there just tickled pink Now everyone sing Elvis is king! Let me hear you sing Elvis is king! Now maybe he weren't Jesus or Mohammed or God But no-one can ever call Elvis a fraud In simpler times he made us all feel good I'm just trying to make sure that's understood Now everyone sing Elvis is King! Let me hear you sing Elvis is king! Take thee no false idols among you There is but one anointed and his name... ...Is Elvis!!!
