Story behind the song
In the mid-Eighties, I spent the summer in Nashville. While there, I had to chance to see a rodeo and was astounded by the unhealthy amount of testosterone in the air. This inspired me to write “Red Light Rodeo.” Veto and the Hit Men made a fabulous (and very electric) recording of it with George Graham at WVIA-FM, but I've not played it out much. Singing it requires that I inhabit the character of the song's unsavory narrator. I worry that listeners might confuse my bitter satire of this outlook with actual support for it. Still, I wish to add my voice to the chorus of anger at the alarming frequency of horrible misogynist pronouncements about violence against women made by public figures.
Lyrics
The other night the moon was bright; I went to have some fun. Tried to find an open mind that wouldn’t weigh a ton. But such a thought just couldn’t be bought between the setting suns. I had enough rope, I was givin up hope. I started to think that I needed a drink; Up ahead a sign that said “the rodeo’s begun.” I always wanted to see a rodeo Nuthin’ like that in the East I can’t even think to compare apples and oranges and pears It’s nuthin to do with fruit ‘cause everyone’s wearin them boots I always wanted to see a rodeo I can Country Western with the best, I even yodel some blues Chew tabacky, chin is scratchy, I’m murder whenever I lose. I’m mean to women who make their livin' bein' the one to abuse. So give me a saddle, I’ll give you a paddle, Lie on the bunk while I’m gettin drunk. Without gettin naked I can make it; Don’t you try to refuse. I always wanted to see a rodeo Nuthin’ like that in the East I can’t even think to compare apples and oranges and pears It’s nuthin to do with fruit ‘cause everyone’s wearin them boots It’s nuthin to do with fruit ‘cause everyone’s wearin them boots It’s nuthin to do with fruit ‘cause everyone’s wearin them boots I always wanted to see a rodeo
