Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
This was created for the Coconut Blues Club "Southern Rock" challenge, May 2011. Once again deep thanks to Jude Law for setting another hugely enjoyable task. If you've never done one of these challenges you definitely need to try - just about the best fun you can have as a musician - there's nothing quite like that sense of raw panic at the start of the second week when you think you're not going to have anything worth posting and then it suddenly seems to coagulate out of nowhere... This time as soon as I saw the invitation I knew there was only one instrument for the job: the Fender Telecaster. I swear all I did was picture the Confederate flag in my mind and that Tele just played itself. So if it's crap don't blame me it was that guitar... Anyway this is dedicated to the Southern states who've had a seemingly constant series of major disasters, but when I spoke to a colleague from Mississipi I sensed an unbreakable spirit there. Even though a town just 5 miles from his mother's house was completely destroyed by tornados last month he felt no urge to move away - they would just endure whatever happened. Maybe the South will rise again after all.
Lyrics
Well I took a drive down the 55 Deep down into Dixieland I saw a poor boy sitting by the side of the road With his head in his hands So I pulled on over and I asked him Son why'd you look so blue? He said friend sit down beside me And I'll tell my tale to you. He said First Katrina came calling Ike knocked on my door The Deepwater Horizon Poisoned all my fishing shore And then a couple hundred tornados Smashed my home down to the floor I don't know what's next But I can't take any more Then he slowly raised his head And, in a quiet voice, he said: We ain't made of sugar We ain't gonna melt when it rains We look after one another Through fire, flood and hurricanes But it's been one thing after another I hope you understand We ain't made of sugar But sometimes we need a little helping hand Well I dug down into my pockets And I gave him all I had Which wasn't much I grant you But it kept me from feeling bad Then I sped back out of Dixie With a tornado on my tail Left in awe of the spirit I saw: Courage off the scale And I still hear the words he said Echo forever through my head: We ain't made of sugar We ain't gonna melt when it rains We look after one another Through fire, flood and hurricanes But it's been one thing after another I hope you understand We ain't made of sugar But sometimes we need a little helping hand

way to go steve-o. well done olde boy. RLS
Seth you are an absolutely amazing and greatly talented musician. The mix of vocal and instruments on this song are so so so good!! And the Southern Rock "feel" would lead one to think that you are one "good ol' boy" from The South. Plus your most appropriate song title and the applicable lyrics show you have Southern humanity in your heart. Thank you for this WONDERFUL song tribute for the brave people of the South. And thanks also for the download of this exceptional song for our JBBQ Music Player - and your very gracious comments about our JBBQ Southern Rock songs for the CBC Song Challenge last Saturday (we were gone then - ironically travelin' down to the "Old South" - Maryland/Virginia - and just came back late Wednesday night - hence my belated song comments to you.) Spank that plank brother. Tremendous guitar playing and tone. Pure Telecaster magic. The lyrics are outstanding , poignant and very appropriate. Uplifting and rocking like there's no tomorrow . . .except there will be for the good people of Joplin. Top marks to you Steve for the song AND the sentiments expressed.

Steve....dude I know this is not really the reaction you were looking for...this brought tears to my eyes. One of my co workers was in the Home Depot in Joplin when the roof caved in. She and her husband luckily were crouched under a table in the back. They survived. Many others were not so lucky. Thank you for a great tribute!
