I Can't Hear What You Say
If it's hot then give God the glory. If it's not then blame me.
If it's hot then give God the glory. If it's not then blame Mitch.
I'm Joe Johnson a local United Methodist Pastor. Before I felt God calling me into the ministry I thought I was going to be a rap artist. For 8 years I did nothing with music until my wife introduced me to a group called "The Gospel Gansters" in 1998. It was an eye opening experience. I was amazed to see people using rap for the glory of God. That day I picked up paper and pen and I haven't put it down yet.
Lyrics
I’m rappin. But you aint hear me
I make beats that bang, say it aint Christianly
They say my messages done changed, I begg differently
But you don’t hear what I say (I say) I say (I say)
(I'll) Tell ya plain, This is just me
And I aint playing no games, this is my ministry
Ya’ll go on complain, do it constructively
Or I can’t hear what you say (you say) you say, you say
Two people standing toe to toe both the ears covered
speaking the king’s English, but don’t understand each other.
If communication is a two way street, then one streets missin
And you might as well talk to the hand cuz the ears aint listenin
be slow to speak and quick to hear
But first be willing to pull the wax out of your ears
I try to make a clearer connection but I don’t know how
I’m like that dude from Verizon… Can you hear me now
It’s better to be thought a fool and close your mouth
Lincoln said Than to open it up and remove all the doubt.
If you’re going to be a witness for Christ you got to be willing to listen
Not only to where others are coming from but the language that gets them
Not everyone is going to find the Lord through a traditional service
It just might take beats and rhymes to get them to hear this
Paul said I’ll become everything to get people to know him
But we act like it aint Christian music if it aint Boch or bethoveen.
I got invited to go perform at my high school assembly
I was hyped up to talk about Christ and to share in my ministry
One of my old teachers stood up and introduced me to the public
He said “Now we all now that Hip Hop isn’t really music”
I can prove to you with a mathematical equation
That rap is noise just a fading sensation
Rap is nothing like the hymns that praise our creator
But put your hands together anyway and welcome this noise-maker.
A bigger man than me would have paid it no mind
But a man like me would mull it over and turn it into a rhyme
A metaphor for how our communication leaves us
When we think there is only one way to influence for Jesus
We’ve got many gifts, but one task to share them
And we’ll all respect each others gifts if we take the time to hear them
That day I asked the Lord to give me strength to control my reaction
Because its obvious my words don’t speak as loud as my actions.
What you say? Huh What you say?
I can’t hear what you say
If I’m in the pulpit, sermonizing
But if my words and my life aint harmonizing
People wont think twice. They’ll think it’s lies and
They wont hear what I say, I say,
(But if I) speak the truth in love boldly
Let the spirit run lose and get a hold of me
Let my life be proof, that God controls me
Then they'll hear what I say, I say, I say
