The last time I saw you, you were with her, a socialite who only cared about money. I knew you were being used, and though I felt nostalgic, I chose to leave instead of waiting for someone who never understood the things.

Story behind the song
The last time I saw you, you were with her. She was a star, or at least thats what they said. A socialite with diamond wrists and a laugh that cost more than my rent. She didnt know who you were, not really. She just knew you had the right suit, the right car, and the right number of zeros in your bank account. That was enough. I stood at the edge of the ballroom, swirling the ice in my glass, watching the whole charade play out. She leaned in close, whispered something in your ear, and you smiled like youd just won the lottery. Maybe you had. But I knew really better. She was all about the bucks. She was balling on the suckers around the way. And you, my darling; well, youd always been a sucker. It wasnt my place to say anything. I wasnt waiting for you anymore. Not long ago. But still, I watched. Even though she looked soft, I knew you only had one hour. Shed bleed you dry and move on before the champagne lost its bubbles. That was the way of the world. Or, at least her way of the world. I could have left before that moment, left without a word. But I lingered a little longer, just long enough to see the moment your grin faltered. Just long enough to see the recognition creep into your eyes: that cold, hard realization that you werent in control. That was enough. And almost more fun than enough. I tossed back the rest of my drink, set the empty glass down, and left. I had better things to do than stay in this play. Better things to do than wait for a man who never knew the rules of the game. The next time I see you, youll be with another girl. Sure, theyll say shes a star. But she wont care who you are either.
Lyrics
The last time you saw me, You were with a girl that they said she was a star. But she didnt know who you were. She was all about the bucks. She was balling on the suckers around the way. She was about to get her booty done. And there I stood, just a silent observer Watching as you played your part. But deep down, I knew the truth. You were lost in her glittering facade, Even though she looked soft, you only had one hour. So, come on now and show me what you won? Hmm Its time to show you what I have. Ill give you all the scorn I may As I take my day away. I gotta do a little better than to stay in this play. I gotta get on with my life. Never waiting for you at all. If I see you, I could laugh, Never awaiting your call. Never a day at all Seeing you walking with your head in the clouds. The sun will rise and the moon will shine For the rest of your life. When I see you, I try not to laugh, Ever awaiting your fall? Ever a day once more. The next time Ill see you, Youll be with another girl. They say shes a star. But she doesnt also want to know the fop you are.
