This was inspired by a presentiment I had that a longstanding tradition had ended. It reminded me of other times that things were suddenly over, even though (as it turned out after I wrote the song) this one wasnt.
It wasn't me
It wasn't you
It wasn't anything we did
Or failed to do
There came a time
When we just knew
WE BROKE THE SPELL
Not a word was spoken
Yet we could tell
The spell was broken
Never a clue
Then it was through
Nothing to do
But bid farewell
WE BROKE THE SPELL
It wasn't you
It wasn't me
It wasn't anything
That either could foresee
A sudden end
To reverie
WE BROKE THE SPELL
The enchantment ended
Clear as a bell
Nothing ill-intended
We couldn't know
Where it would go
We had to grow
I wish you well
WE BROKE THE SPELL
It was a day like any other
When we'd never be the same
When we lost the grand illusion
When we gave away the game
When at last our eyes
Could see the cracks were spreading
When at last our hearts
Could feel where we were heading
WE BROKE THE SPELL
(interlude)
You had to change
I had to change
Things had to change
It's just as well
We broke one hell
Of a spell
