Story behind the song
On an earlySeptember morning he awoke with a "vivid" melody (Las Vegas) and unlike with the previous dreams, he immediately hummed the melody and handful of lyrics into a nearby tape recorder. Deciding to take a shot at writing an entire tune,Lamphere devoted the next several hours to jotting down all of these ideas and by early afternoon, had a near completed song. This experience lefthimdumbfounded and thinking to himself "What-in-the-heck was that?"
With the help of some very talented pianists-arrangers (Skip Green and Bobby Schiff) Lamphere was able to get the notes and harmonies on paper and begin performing the song shortly after.
