V1
When I went out this morning for my daily walk
I saw my neighbor down the street; I stopped to have a talk
He said his wife had been real sick; times had gotten hard
Then I saw the sign “for sale” posted in his yard
Chorus 1
It’s the sign of the times
People losing all they have in their so called golden years
It’s the sign of the times
V2
Later on my way to work I saw Ol’ Navy Jim
Holding his “Please Help” sign with a toothless grin
Begging from his wheelchair almost every day
I handed him a dollar bill as I drove away
Chorus 2
It’s the sign of the times
People barely gettin’ by on pennies, nickles and dimes
It’s the sign of the times
V3
Up the road a man and wife held a cardboard sign
“Looking for a job” it read but what blew my mind
Children in the background not too far from where they were
It was plain to see they’d been living in a car
Chorus 3
It’s the sign of the times
People giving up on the American dream
It’s the sign of the times
Bridge
Users and boozers wearing dirty rags
Used to be the homeless now what’s so sad
Could be your neighbors or your family
How did things get so bad?
Chorus
It’s the sign of the times
How can we turn it around?
