Story behind the song
Co-write with Brian Ralston (aka SelfTort) of Australia. Brian really is on my wavelength with these kind of lyrics. It's based on a true story and is a fun tale with a moral message about a workman of integrity and the Bank of England. One of my favorite collaborations.
Lyrics
In the year of 1800, the Bank of England made a move, A workman said they’d blundered, and the blunder would be proved. The new gold vault was strong and safe, so they offered him two grand, No way the gold of England could be rifled by this man. Chorus A two grand wager, worth more than a million pounds today, A two grand wager, and the workman made them pay it all, He made the Governor eat his hat, and gratefully decree, The workman was indeed a man of deep integrity. Now some admired his honesty, and some said “What a fool” But he just waited patiently, surrounded by a pool of nuggets. When the staff arrived he wryly started to explain, He’d entered through a trap door, from the sewers and the drains. Chorus A two grand wager, worth more than a million pounds today, A two grand wager, and the workman made them pay it all, He made the Governor eat his hat, and gratefully decree, The workman was indeed a man of deep integrity. Bridge What an honest man he was He was honest to a fault, When he could have easily stolen, All the nuggets from the vault. Chorus A two grand wager, worth more than a million pounds today, A two grand wager, and the workman made them pay it all, He made the Governor eat his hat, and gratefully decree, The workman was indeed a man of deep integrity Yes the workman was indeed a man of deep integrity.
