Story behind the song
In 2004, the Spirit Rover landed on Mars. Initially, it attempted to send and receive data constantly, even during hours of darkness. This drained its solar-powered batteries to dangerously low levels. Once this confusion was corrected, Spirit operated successfully until 2010. This song is Spirit's hypothetical communications to the Jet Propulsion Lab back on Earth during those early, frustrating days in 2004.
Lyrics
1 Jet, come in, Jet; listen, JPL. Gotta keep, gotta keep this short ‘cause it’s minutes on my cell. Tellin’ you, it’s cold an’ I been up all night. My energy’s drainin’; I’m nervous an’ I’m frightened. You think you got big problems livin’ where you are? What about me? I got insomnia on Mars. What about me? CHORUS: Hweghhhhhhet keghhhhhhhhhhhhh Zero-One, Zero-One Hweghhhhhhet keghhhhhhhhhhhhh Zero-One, Zero-One Reboooooooot Safe Mode Safe Mode Safe Mode Safe Mode 2 Feelin’ overloaded, I’m headin’ for a fall; Need some time to myself so I’m screening my calls. My days and my nights are all mixed up; ‘Tween the rocks an’ th’ sand, I had about enough. You think you got big problems livin’ where you are? What about me? I got insomnia on Mars. What about me? CHORUS CODA: OM My anomaly was serious, but now I’m doin’ fine; A couple hours’ sleep, it helped me clear my mind. Snapped a lot o’ pictures, then I took a walk. Found a little water; I’m ready now to talk. ‘S outa this world, a marvelous view; ‘S a hundred million miles & I hope this gets to you. ‘S outa this world, a marvelous view; ‘S a hundred million miles & I hope this gets to you. I hope this gets to you. I hope this gets to you.
