Family Tree © 2009 James Ryce
I was born a rough boy and it wasn't hard to see
That others all around here were never quite like me
Fighting, drinking, stealing make up my history
A few times got arrested while doing all three
When the old man had enough he cut my branch off the family tree
My brother was a hero of the local college scene
My sister was a beauty a home coming queen
The old man was a banker full of pride and self-esteem
I think I saw him smiling on the day he cut me free
Mama fought and cried trying to keep me in the family tree
Well I guess they always felt I wouldn't amount to much
My Mama's been the only one through all these years who ever stayed in touch
I let it slip get tired of the fussing and all the fighting you see
I took a trip down to Louisiana to find whats missing from me
There's got to be a reason I fell from the family tree
The day I met my Uncle he was walking out the door,
Of a prison where they put him back in 1984
He never had no visitors nobody came but me
The only day that I showed up is when they set him free
We must have both fallen from that branch of the family tree
I guess they always felt he wouldn't amount to much
My Mama’s been the only one through all these years who ever stayed in touch
He lets it slip get tired of the fussing and all the fighting you see
You know the only time that I ever felt like family
Is riding home on this train just him and me
Coming back to town it'll be a sight to see
We'll be shaking the foundation of that family tree
I found the reason I fell from the Family Tree
I found the reason I fell from the Family Tree
I found the reason I fell from the Family Tree
