A pretty ballad about my immediate family history and the power of love to overcome obstacles.
I wanted to tell the story of my family - starting with my mom, then my dad and up to current day. I think this song is "almost country". Though I'm not a country artist, in my opinion this song would fit will with Randy Travis or Alan Jackson.
Never Too Late
words and music by Patrick Thompson
March 24, 2009
(Verse 1)
Jean was born in 1943
She married young and flew across the sea
An air force wife in Tripoli
Came home to start a family
At 21 she had son - that's me
(postverse 1)
She didn't know her husband was a cheating man
When she found out she made change in plan
All alone, just her and her infant son
She got to work - A new chapter had begun
***
(Verse 2)
Jean met Fred in 1964
They couldn't know what the future had in store
A young and happy family of three
we made it through - just mom and dad and me
(postverse 2)
They could not have known on that first date
the future and the love that they'd create
38 years from that humble start
they'd stay together, til death would do them part
(Chorus 1)
It's never too late
To find love
It's never too late
to rise above
Keeping your heart open
to the possibility
That's the key to knowing
It's never too late
(Verse 3)
They got the news in 1991
A struggle for her life had just begun
Time again for another change in plan
She lived out her life as full as anyone can
(postverse 3)
Fred lost Jean in early 2002
he'd done as much as any man could do
and despite the prayers of all that went her way
God must have needed another angel in heaven that day
(Verse 4)
Afterward Fred had a few tough years
but he survived the sorrow and the tears
'til he found Lyn, the last love of his life
and they faced their golden years as man and wife
(postverse 4)
Sharing all the things they both enjoyed
embracing every day and filled the void
They took a swing at life and stayed on par
take a shot with all you've got - and you can go so far
(Chorus 2)
It's never too late
To find love
It's never too late
to rise above
Keeping your heart open
to the possibility
That's the key to knowing
It's never too late
