Story behind the song
"Kettentanz" is artistic director Gerald Arpino's salute to the Old Vienna of court balls and weingartens. The ballet is filled with Viennese style dances performed to the galops, waltzes, and polkas of Johann Strauss. "....it has invention and a blithe use of music that extends and illuminates its dancers, and shows an imaginative sense of form."--Clive Barnes, The New York Times "Birthday Variations" is Arpino's neo-romantic ballet that was commissioned to celebrate the 30th birthday of The Joffrey Ballet. The London Symphony Orchestra gives a stirring performance of Verdi's opera music from "I Lombardi" and "I Vespri Siciliani." "Birthday Variations, set to some of Verdi's infectious opera-ballet music, is a sparkling showpiece of classical dancing... It is a delight..." --Anna Kisselgoff, The New York Times
