Story behind the song
After the death of her husband, my friend went on a road trip by herself to a lot of the places they had traveled to in the past. She brought along her automatic coffee pot because it reminded her so much of traveling with him. It was a way to bring him along for one last trip.
Lyrics
AUTOMATIC COFFEE POT ©Ricki E. Bellos Just a short trip to ease my mind It started out as a weekend drive Halfway through the Midwest I find It’s been a while since I felt this alive I brought along our old automatic coffee pot So in the mornings when I wake up It smells like mornings used to With you Through the Dakotas I’m burning mad I’m scared and lonely in Montana and Idaho At the coast I’m crying sad By California this trip is getting old It was way too soon for you to leave But if someone asked me I’d say we had a long run And it was a good one Never had such good love before But I’ll know now when I find it Next time I’ll know what to ask for And I’ll know when to quit You know I left that old automatic coffee pot With some guy in Arizona, now when I wake up It smells like mornings are going to Without you Just a short trip to ease my mind
