Story behind the song
Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, saved a neglected, elderly dog from spending his last days, perhaps hours, lying in his own faeces, unable to stand or reach water. The Blair County DA and Judge decided Tammy was a thief, not a rescuer and charged her with theft of property. The owners of the dog have not been charged. This travesty of justice began Sept 11th 2006. Doogie the dog lived for 5 1/2 months following rescue, time he surely would not have had if Tammy had not taken him for vet care and given him a safe, warm foster home. The DA wanted the dog returned to the owners.
Lyrics
'Justice For Tammy' Well there's heroes in America And there's one named Tammy Grimes She saved a dying dog out there The law says it's a crime! There's good citizens and criminals It seems they mixed 'em up Why can't you save an animal Without being dragged to court? We can't understand it Why compassion is a sin This isn't how God planned it Love should be part of everything Because dogs deserve better And good people sure do too Oh every creature matters The law must speak for you! © Maria Daines/Paul Killington 2008
