Story behind the song
Written for Good Friday.
The Ten Commandments are under attack in every public place. Though all our laws are based upon these precious rules, our legal system seems bent on abolishing them on every public display.
Jesus said "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. "

The Law the Father gave to Moses on that holy hill
Written by God's finger, Words directed by His Will
Clear-cut, black and white Commandments we must follow in His Way
Hewn by Love alone, two slabs of stone, God gave to us that day.
Nbr 1, have no other gods. Make no graven idols (two).
Nbr 3, don't take My name in vain, it's a holy name to you.
Honor dad and mom, and do not kill, don't commit adultery.
Do not steal, or bear false witness against your neighbor to your friends
Do not covet what you haven't got, that brings the list to ten.
Laws of love and justice given, clear-cut rules of black and white
Meant to lead us out of darkness, into the realm of light.
Ten Commandments God has given us to follow on that day,
Black and white laws that we've taken, and we colored Shades of Gray.
Have no other gods but money, 'OMG' is just a phrase
Do not kill, except for babies due in just a couple days.
Weekends are a good time to pick up extra work,
Honor dad and mom, unless you think they're just a pair a pair of jerks.
Don't covet what you haven't got, unless you steal it and you don't get caught
It's ok to lie, unless you're under oath, our Presidents have taught...
The Law the Father gave, the Son fulfilled throughout His days
Not a single law was broken, not a single time He strayed,
But in between the lines of black, on a canvas brilliant white
Like a paint-by-number picture, Jesus brought into the light:
The grass was green, the sky was blue, the sun was yellow on that day
The cross was brown, stained with red, as You carried it away
Your body white, drained of everything Your great heart had to give
The red ran down and struck the ground, as You died, that we might live.
Nbr 1, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind
Nbr 2, Love your neighbor as your self, for you will find
That on these two hang all the Law, and all the Prophets you have heard
This law of love, fulfilled in us, through God's incarnate Word!
