Story behind the song
I had this 5/4 guitar lick that I had written and wanted to make a song out of. I came up with the verse grooves, programmed bass & drums and the song just kept growning from there. I got the whole thing finished and was very happy with the instrumental part of the song.
I struggled on the lyrics and played it live in my solo (OMB) show with different lyrics (that were all about ME!) but I decided to redo the lyrics and make it as if I were talking directly to someone else! I think that perspective fits this song much better! The verses remind me of Robert Cray but the Chorus gets wild and reminds me of something The Tubes would do, maybe a little INXS in there too! The guitar fills in the last Chorus even add a little Hendrix trippiness to it!
I really hope you like it! Sign my message board and let me know what you think!
Lyrics
Check Yourself by Scott Lowber
-Verse 1-
Now you’ve been sayin’, things that just ain’t true
…bein’ places you shouldn’t be
And you been sneakin’ round where you shouldn’t go
…seein’ people you shouldn’t see
I know you got reasons, you got ties… Sometimes you gotta be, just where you gotta be
I’ve heard excuses, I’ve heard lies… and now you get to hear it from me..
(CHORUS)
Best friend, check yourself. You brought it on yourself.
-Verse 2-
You’ve been playing on some dirty ground and it’s wearin’ all over you
Your double dealings got you all turned around, don’t know which story goes to who?
I’ve seen one thing, but you tell another. I know it was you… you say it ain’t true…
I can’t change ya, or re-arrange ya, you know what you gotta do…
(CHORUS)
Best friend, check yourself. You brought it on yourself.
Bud, if I were you, Here’s what I would do…
Best friend, check yourself. You did this to yourself.
Best friend make your move. It all comes down to you…
-Guitar LEAD-
-Verse 3-
So damn worried that the chips will fall, what if the table’s turned?
Lookin’ over your shoulder, runnin’ from the us all…
…there’s a bridge or two you’ve burned…
I know you got reasons… you got a side…
You’re always gonna do, just what you wanna do
I know excuses, I know lies and I know what I’m getting’ from you…
(CHORUS)
Sounding great Scott! Can't wait to see you live again! Carolyn
