Dave Turnbow (guitar, lead vocals and songs) speaking on behalf of The Venerable Beads... like our namesake, we are no longer moving among us, yet that which remains holds its own. A trio - I, Sean Jensen (bass and vocals) and Pete Kassal (drums and vocals) - that took eclectic as modus operandi... pop, rock, funk, reggae, blues, spacey jams.

Story behind the song
Hartford, completed 10/3/93—I remember seeing a short documentary about kudzu years ago, and it was pretty funny. On a Memphis-Houston roadtrip in 1988, we came across a whole mess of kudzu passing through Mississippi, and I explained it to [then wife] Stacey. On a plane trip in 1990, I wrote the two choruses and part of the third verse on a drink napkin, and didn’t ever get around to finishing it until years later. The music is from a song I wrote called "Get Off the Stomp" (At one time, Mark Thompson had written lyrics to go with it, but they were lost).
Lyrics
Your love is kudzu Exotic and energizing And I’ve fallen victim to that Botanical gleam in your eye My soil’s been enriched By its powerful roots It’s stronger than quicksand And faster than lightning Can’t stop the spread I’m up to my head Creeping into my bed I’ll take a raincheck instead Too late, it’s coverin’ me Swallowing up what once was there Something else formerly All now a monument The consummate weed Its expansive greed Devouring my need A terror indeed
