Based on the book of Job, this is Job's aria of despair. For baritone. Here, the voice part is played by trumpet an octave up. Can also be sung by a mezzo-soprano.
God is having a conversation with Satan. He points out Job, what a good and righteous man he is. Oh sure, says Satan, of course he honors you -- look at all you have given him. But take away those things, and you will see, he will curse you. So God enters into this wager with Satan and tells Satan to do whatever he wants with Job and we'll see who is right. Thus God and Satan play with Job's life as casually as playing a game of dice.
Oh that the Lord would hear me
and grant my request:
That it would please Him to crush me --
let loose His mightly hand
and cut me down.
One thing alone consoles me,
one thing alone:
Even in pain unending
I have not denied the word
of the Holy One.
What is my strength, that I should wait?
What is my ending, ending?
Oh that the Lord would hear me
and grant my request:
That it would please Him to crush me --
let loose His mightly hand
and ...
cut ...
me ...
down.
