For over 40 years I played lead guitar and did back-up vocals in various country bands. It has been one of the greatest thrills of my life. But, these days I stay at home and compose songs, both lyrics and music. My writing style is much broader than just country music. I also write southern rock, a little blues, lots of smooth jazz and movie themes and even some latin music. I have been writing for about 20 years and hope to for quite a few more years.

Story behind the song
Except for the last two verses, this is based upon my experiences in Vietnam. And, I have tried very hard to keep politics and social views out of this. This is a song about a person...not about a war.
Lyrics
A Soldier’s Story © August 2005, Alan D. David, BMI All Rights Reserved (v1) I remember that day, I was barely eighteen The Army had made me, a fighting machine With a body of steel, and a scowl on my face I boarded that plane, to a far away place (v2) So quickly I learned, as my buddies all fell War steals your senses, it traps you in Hell Scared half to death, my life on the line I’m crying inside, but they think I’m just fine (v3) I kneeled by the body, all twisted and torn No more than twenty, from the year he was born His uniform different, a strange sounding name Did I kill him for cause, or was it in vain (v4) No glory in killing, but the need to survive Made me fight harder, and kept me alive Three weeks later, I was headed for home Just silence around me, as I traveled alone (v5) The family had gathered, the first time in years They all stood around me, eyes flushing with tears Serenity shattered, in my hometown By the twenty-one shots, as they lowered me down (v6) Now that I’m gone, my conscience is good I just did my duty, the best that I could As I lie here in peace, in the soil of His bed Remember I lived, not that I’m dead
