'Momma, Play A Song For Me'
( Written by E. Gowens/R. Johnston)
I'm just laying here in bed letting my mind wonder back through the years
To a place in time where I was five years old and, you know, I can still almost hear
Momma playing for the congregation at our old mountain Church
it was such beautiful gospel music and in my family, the lord always came first
When Momma played “Rock of ages” the choir would stand and join in
Oh…What I would give to hear my momma play that song and sing it for me once again
She would practice on an old worn out upright piano we had in our humble home
One my daddy had bought for her, by many long hours of hard work, working his fingers to the bone
I would lay in bed at night and listen for hours as she would play those beautiful songs.
She never took piano lessons, she just learned to play that old piano all on her own.
In my mind I hear those songs she’s playing in Heaven where I hope someday I’ll be
Then one more time I can say “Momma, please play a song for me”
Sometimes when I go back to the old home place for a visit, a strange thing happens there
As the wind blows through those mountain valleys I sometimes seem to hear
A faint sound of a piano playing and a choir’s voice joining in
Oh, what I would give to hear my Momma play that old piano again
Well….one day my momma was called to Heaven and I just couldn’t see
why God in all his wisdom would take my Momma away from me
It was much later in my life when I began to understand
that Momma was called to heaven to play her piano in God’s own Angel Band
Momma, Please play a song .....just for me
