A Powerful song about love lost. Lyric by Dawn Sinclair, Music, arrangement and vocal Mark Ellis...thank you so much for this one Mark
I have wanted to write a powerful lyric for a male vocalist for a long time and took my inspiration for this one from two classics, although the subject is different from them. I discussed the lyric with Mark before he took it on and he was more than willing to give it a go although he was nervous I could tell. As it happens, his first draft blew my mind and although I had to persuade him to remain as the vocalist, he was motivated to experiment on this second draft which is just perfect to my ears. By the way, he only added a single word to the original lyric... and it fits his music exactly ---amazing!
It’s Not Me
V1
If I cared enough that you're walking away
I might struggle forever for the right words to say
If the hollowness in my empty heart
was due to the moment my world fell apart
CH 1
If it was true
that I still loved you
I'd be no one that I ever knew.
V2
If I felt the pain of unbearable loss
I might scream to the skies like the man on the cross
I would plead for an answer to the question "why?"
and never comprehend however I try
CH 2
If it was true
that I still loved you
I really don't know what I'd do
BR
But it's not me who's left here
without a hope or a prayer,
of ever knowing love again,
of ever going there.
It's not me who would beg you
to come back and make it right,
to wipe away the prospect
of another endless night
Rfn
It's not me... it can't be me... don't let it be me
V3
If my hands were shaking as I stood alone
I could no longer call this empty house a home.
If my photographs showed that love was a lie
I'd tear every one of them in pieces, wouldn't I?
CH 1
If it was true
that I still loved you
I'd be no one that I ever knew.
Rfn
But it's not me... it can't be me... don't let it be me
Finale
No .... that's not who I am
Not really who I am
‘Cause I don't give a damn.
