PREHISTORIC ROADKILL
–J. Wrabek
[THE RAP: Out in the wilds of central Oregon is the little town of Fossil, home of the Wheeler County Bluegrass Festival. At the Festival, every July 4, they award a prize for the best song written about Fossil. This is my entry for 2007.]
1.
It's a cozy little place, on a prehistoric lake
Where reptiles big as houses used t'roam;
Now, the lake is dry andhard, and there's things out in the yard
Left behind by the lizardkind that used t'call it home.
CHORUS:
Scattered through the landscape are the fossils made of stone
Of all the plants and animals departed long ago;
When I go down to the basement, when I dig out in the lawn,
I've got prehistoric roadkill to remind me that you're gone.
2.
No one's sure what they ate, how they acted out on dates–
Pieces of their bones is all that's left;
But I feel kinship with their kind, with ev'ry fossil that I find–
Since we went bust, I feel I'm just a fragment of myself.
CHORUS:
Scattered through the landscape are the fossils made of stone
Of all the plants and animals departed long ago;
When I go down to the basement, when I dig out in the lawn,
I've got prehistoric roadkill to remind me that you're gone.
3.
Did a comet strike one day, and blow the dinosaurs away?
Or did they die off slow, like you and me?
One day noticing it's gone, beatin' heart turned to stone,
With just a shape to indicate the way things used t'be.
CHORUS:
Scattered through the landscape are the fossils made of stone
Of all the plants and animals departed long ago;
When I go down to the basement, when I dig out in the lawn,
I've got prehistoric roadkill to remind me that you're gone.
4.
In the future, when I die, just let my body calcify;
Let future species wonder what they've found;
Might bring a tear to their eye, like the lizards do to mine–
Bringing up old memories that won't stay underground.
CHORUS:
Scattered through the landscape are the fossils made of stone
Of all the plants and animals departed long ago;
When I go down to the basement, when I dig out in the lawn,
I've got prehistoric roadkill to remind me that you're gone.
REPEAT CHORUS TO END
