To Each Generation a Rose

This is a song about families - what we receive from those who've come before us, and what we'll pass along. It's actually a song for my mother, and all the other Roses in my life.

Solo acoustic folk, with a bit of celtic music thrown in for good measure.
I do mostly acoustic folk music as well as some celtic music. I value well-crafted songs, with solid lyrics and a good melody line. Musicality - harmonies, interesting guitar work - draws me into a song, so I try to bring these qualities into my own music. You can find out more about me at . Story behind the song
I don't know about other people's relationships with their mothers, but mine with my mother is fantastic. This song is for her, but it's really about those who have come before us, and those who will live on when we're gone. The name Rose (or Rosemary) has been in my family for 5 or 6 generations and now my daughter, my niece and my cousin's daughter all carry the name of Rose in their name. There's something to that!
Lyrics
To Each Generation A Rose In her life she’s been touched by roses In her life she’s been wounded by the thorns In her life she’s seen wonder in the lightening And sorrow in the storms. Chorus: Mother gives to daughter Daughter does the same It’s all in the name Her grandma planted roses so many years ago But she never had the time to watch them grow Now it’s her turn to plant a garden, wondering what will be She’ll just have to wait and see Chorus Bridge: Every generation has a story she can tell about the beauty of the rose Roses have always bloomed in my family tree That beauty will live on long after me Her garden grew and flourished with love and tender care Through storm and sun and rain, she was always there Then the seeds were scattered to take root on their own Knowing that the Rose was there for them at home Chorus Now her daughters stand and each proudly hold a rose Love passed down from those who’ve come before Where that love will blossom next no one can really know But we’re sure it will grow and grow and grow.
