Story behind the song
This song was the final deciding factor in our band name. For weeks now we had searched for an appropriate band name. We both liked the idea of the pheonix due to its link with rebirth, and were pairing many different words with "pheonix" to try and get the right mix.
When I tried "Requiem" I knew that wasn't our band name... but it stirred something inside me all the same. A requiem is a funeral song... but if you had a requiem for a pheonix it would not be so sad. When a pheonix dies, a new bird is born from the ashes. Thus the old passes to make way for the new. I was so moved that I wrote the first chorus on my way home from work, and had a finished song not much afterward.
After reading the words "Like a pheonix rising from the ashes" Ian and I both knew that there was no more fighting it -- Pheonix Rising was the right name for us.
