WHEN I JUMP OFF THE CLIFF I'LL THINK OF YOU
–J. Wrabek
[THE RAP: I wrote this for the Blue Mountain Fiddlers, on the way to play at one of their shows. They like songs that are really, really fast, with a lot of lead breaks, because they're mostly very good musicians and like to show off. So this song has room for 7 lead breaks if they want to use ‘em.
This is a bluegrass song. You've heard the adage that bluegrass songs are always about death; that's not quite true. They have dealth IN them. But I couldn't think of any bluegrass songs that were ALL about death. And the rest, as they say, is History.
This is another song where I need to tell my wife this is Not About Her...]
1.
When I jump off the cliff, I'll think of you,
And all the things you put me through;
You were mine, now you're not, and it bothers me a lot–
When I jump off the cliff, I'll think of you.
2.
As I sail through the air, I'll call your name;
You were always good at drivin' me insane;
You won't ever hear my call, you never listened much at all–
But as I sail through the air, I'll call your name.
3.
When my skull cracks, you'll still be on my mind;
I hope you'll still be doin' fine;
When my brain turns to mush, I'll still hunger for your touch–
When my skull cracks, you'll still be on my mind.
4.
When they say the last rites, I'll hear your voice,
Out laughin' and carousin' with the boys;
You were gone long before you ever headed out the door–
When they say the last rites, I'll hear your voice.
5.
When they lay me on the slab, don't worry none;
You know how t' keep on havin' fun;
Just remember all the years you acted like I wasn't here,
And when they lay me on the slab, don't worry none.
6.
When they put me in the coffin, nail it tight,
So I can stop walkin' around at night;
I've spent too much time alone, wonderin' if you're coming home–
When they put me in the coffin, nail it tight.
7.
When they give me the funeral, I'll be there;
If you come, I prob'ly shouldn't care;
All my friends and neighbors said I won't miss you once I'm dead–
When they give me the funeral, I'll be there.
8.
Oh, I just can't wait till I'm safe underground;
I know that you'll still be around;
And it'll take a year or two before I'm rotten just like you–
Oh, I just cant wait till I'm safe underground.
9.
When I jump off the cliff, I'll think of you,
And all the things you put me through;
You were mine, now you're not, and it bothers me a lot–
When I jump off the cliff, I'll think of you.
