Story of a tormented soul and absolute faith
This is the first song I ever wrote or recorded. The first line of the song was stuck in my head for about two weeks but I guess the fear of failure kept me from attempting to write it. Well, finally, I woke up early on a Sunday morning and just started writing and had the song done in about a half hour. I was never good at remembering melodies so I called my friend, Ed Belote, and told him to come over and bring his guitar at 7:30 AM! So, he came over and had it chorded out in no time.
When it came time to record, we decided to do this one first and you can tell. I guess you can say that I cut my teeth on this tune. We lose time in spots and go out of key alot but it was the greatest thing in the world when we laid it down. I love this song and plan to record it again and not go the 80's ballad road with it. I'll always cherish this recording though because that's my mother singing the backing vocals. She's the real singer in the family - she makes me look like a punk! Oh well, everybody has to start somewhere!
Her Wings
If you look behind her eyes, you’ll see a thousand miles of pain
She says tomorrow the suns gonna shine but today it feels like rain
She hides the scares from what she calls her medication, says she needs it to get by
Says she’s been hurtin’ so long that gettin’ right is somethin’ she’s too scared to try
Nobody knows where she came from, she don’t know where she’s been
All she owns is a worn out hotel Bible and the pages are wearin’ thin
She says she reads it everyday and tears out the pages she don’t like
Says that her favorite part is the one that says one day she’ll fly
-CHORUS-
She says Jesus is holdin’ her wings
And one day she’s gonna fly
She can hear the angels sing
Waitin’ for her in the sky
She got closer everyday
To lookin’ Jesus in the eye
She says once she got them wings
Everything … is gonna be alright
She just up and left us one day but she didn’t get that far
They ruled out wrongdoin’ and like everything else, blamed it all on those scars
They processed the paperwork, another vagrant junkie who fell from grace
We never found that Bible but I know she’s in a better place
She knew Jesus was holdin’ her wings
And one day she’s gonna fly
She could hear the angels sing
Callin’ her name up on high
She got closer everyday
To lookin’ Jesus in the eye
She says once she got them wings
Everything … is gonna be alright
Yeah, now she’s got them wings
And everything … is gonna be alright
