Story behind the song
Not In Our Name – In our names government s wage wars that maim and kill thousands of innocent civilians. If a child looses their life, it’s called collateral damage. Not in our name is a movement to halt the use of violence by governments. War brings more violence, not peace. Not In Our Name Organization http://www.notinourname.net/index.html
Lyrics

Not In Our Name

1) A child steps on a land mine; Loses a leg for a lifetime; They don't call it a crime, just collateral damage. Bombs and stray bullets fly; So many innocent civilians die; And if you ask why, they call you unpatriotic. As they kill and maim, they smugly explain It's for our freedom and democracy. But free from the fear of their propaganda it's clear It has nothing to do with you and me !

2) Thousands detained and disappear; What they did wrong is never made clear. When you're blinded by fear, you never ask questions. Like a thief in the night, They deal and steal away our most basic rights. With no end in sight to all this repression. Wrapped in the flag, the warmongers brag "It's our manifest destiny." But strip away the guise, of their distortions and lies, They aren't doing this for you and me.

[CHORUS] I'll not be party to their murderous game, Not with my body, my soul or my brain. Stand up with me and claim - Not in our Name, Not in My Name, Not in our Name. Not in America's Name. Not in God's Name NOT IN OUR NAME !

3) While the death squads torture and kill, They hope we close our eyes and just pay the bill; Stay complacent and still, while the beast is unleashed. Four-hundred billion for war, They never tell us what it's being used for. One thing's for sure, in won't buy us peace. They preach to each of us that war is a must For our safety and security. But one thing's for sure, war is no cure For what's ailing you and me.

[Chorus]
